“Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead”

“Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead” is the second book in this hilarious series, but new readers will immediately be caught up in the adventures as  things unfold in Donavan’s first person narrative. The story itself is full of things that are not what they seem to be: potty training that is not potty training, dates that are not dates, freezers that are not freezers, business ventures that are not business ventures, and dead bodies that are not, well, yes, they actually are dead.

Donovan’s tale of solving mysteries and stopping bad guys opens with a death; Christopher is dead.  That certainly grabs the readers’ attention as Christopher’s body bobs in the water and Donovan admits to killing him. Things get worse, better, and definitely funnier as Donovan and company (kids, ex-husband, ultra-hip nanny, and assorted acquaintances), move through daily life, struggle with bills, manage personal relationships, and navigate the dark web of contract killers (one of whom is actually Donovan, much to her dismay), oh yes, and try to prevent the murder of Donovan’s cheating ex-husband.

“Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead” is a quick read, if you don’t count the laughing time. There is a lot of drama and trauma; Donovan has a cheating ex-husband after all, not to mention that “reputation” she has on the dark web for “fixing” things for other wives; all those elements come together with unusual complications. I received a review copy of “Finlay Donovan Knocks ‘Em Dead” from Elle Cosimano, Minotaur Book, and Macmillan Publishing. It was entertaining, enjoyable, and I cannot wait for Finlay’s next adventure.
